Urnbuilding

Plan2: Urnbuilding

In this plan we combine the workingbuilding ‘de puddingfabriek’ with a cemetery. As a meeting place between the death and the living …We are thinking about a paper pavilion made out of  urns and flower vases in wich e.g a workshop-room is situated for elderly people, a sport accomodation as shown in plan 1 or a clubhouse for a model-airplane club.

Re: Urnbuilding

A cemetary on the roof is a very beautifull use of the special atmosphere this urabn space has to offer. All poetic allergories are very clear. Also considering the very practical shortage of space innercity cemetaries have at the moment. Beautiful and innovative at the same time! I imagine a tower of the deseized slowly growing towards heaven the older the city becomes ...

Re: Urnbuilding

I agree with Thuur and 'software wise' Urn-building is interesting too! We could have recordings of the dead and when pictures and tapes of them are also up there, their documented existence would (also?) fade slowly in the sun and rain. I propose to put little speakers or monitors up there too to give the cemetery an extra dimension. Instead of just walking around and looking at the names you'd have a broader experience.

Re: Urnbuilding

a good idea this cemetary, and the clubhouse for model airplanes.
There also is a model race car club in Groningen(real80.nl)
Maybe less poetic than airplanes and more noise I guess but also seems fun and easy to play??
I thougth maybe there could be a pigeonsplace on the roof, who come back flying with messages or microchips with videomessages/sound. a coloured LEDlight on to see them coming or flying around. (hopefully not as an easy target for the other team...)
Maybe the etruskian coloured stones can give an extra impuls and atmosphere to the activity/cemetary on the roof.

Final DO- sofware + Hardware by Nora:

CITY ON A ROOF
TEAM 6  Nora Definitief Ontwerp (Developed Design )

SOFTWARE –
DESCRIPTION OF SOFTWARE:
Open Source Mini Prototype techniques and technology of Mini-Transat Sailing. Investigating a sense of freedom on the roof. Investigation of materials like different foils and protectionmaterial.
Like transmission
30 % Reflection
67 % Absorption
99 % UV-protection
Energyprotection: 84%

DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE
A minimal shelter to house for example a shower or a private cool space. Dancing, sleeping, working..

DESCRIPTION OF INNOVATION ASPECTS
• to use foil material for privacy, sun and heat protection. Making the use and living on the roofs possible and pleasent.

• Maintaining the roof to stay a roof. No need of building high walls around for privacy if the prototype has privacy already for its own.

• Communication in openess is possible to put the lights on in parts of the prototype. You will be seen! Be careful of a day or nightshow on the roof.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW TO MEET ROOFTOP REQUIREMENTS
• this is not a lightweigthed object..
• it is a minimal shelter for one or two persons.
• connection to other shelters is possible by playing with lights on or off. Or the roof material from emergencyfoil which can unfold or made larger for another shelter near this shelter.
• roof surfaces capable of catching and storing water. Not yet but would be a great plan also to use sunenergy for the shower.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW HARDWARE MEETS SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
• in the spirit of Mini-Transat sailing minimal shelter is provided for one or two persons.
• Use of foil for privacy and openess. Also used on boats.
• The size is larger than a ‘normal’shower so its also possible to use for other shelterfunctions like sleeping for 1/2 persons. And not to un/dress or dry outside if you dont want to or for other reasons.
• this is a prototype so software and hardware changes are possible.

DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE MATERIALS

HARDWARE –
Material:
Spyfoil
Wood
Acrylplaat/Lexaan
Board
Emergency Foil.

HARDWARE CONSTRUCTION TEAM
Team 6/Nora

DESCRIPTION OF SOFTWARE MATERIALS
• light and signs knownledge
   working with privay and freedom

SOFTWARE TEAM
Team 6/Nora

INTERACTION WITH NEIGHBOURS
• the open or closed building is seen from a distant by using light inside during the day and especially by night. Maybe it can be used as a lightsign or to know when the shelter/shower is free or used. The use of the shelter inside a roofcommunity/and environment can be one of making special sign/lightrules in and around the shelter.

Re: Urnbuilding

Dear Team 6,

I know about your plan for some time now, and I am slightly bugged by it. I like the idea of a urnhouse (the word cemetery is only used for burial places) on a roof... I like the idea of it being in the middle of town... I like the idea of adding pictures and sound... But I have one concern and one strong objection. The concern is this:
- Most people who die are, luckily, old. That means that their widow(er) and some of the family is quite old too. When was the last time you tried to get a (electrical) wheelchair on a roof?
The objection:
- The idea of combining a urnhouse with any other activity. Depending ofcourse a litllebit on the side-activity, but the idea to have to mourn next to a woman on a fitness-bike makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. The idea of a miniature planes workshop has at least a poetic value. But still ... You open your proposal with a short statement (the one about the parks where we want to be and forget all about death etc.) in my opinion the cemetery has the exact opposite function. In daily life I do not want to think about death all the time, I go to a cemetery to be confronted with death. If you stare long enough at a grave death becomes very realistic indeed. If I want to go to the living again I simply leave the cemetery, and usually I actually need the long way from countryside to civilisation, because it helps me switch back to the liveliness of life.
At the cemeteries I know there is a very strong guideline (not outspoken) how to act when other people are met. You don't speak to them, you exchange a short nod with the head just to say that you feel for them, but that you will leave them alone. People must feel free to shout, cry or even laugh, without being bothered, and inhibited as we are, we need a silent, 'safe', environment for that.
Obviously, all these remarks come from my own experience and culture, and since mourning is an extremely subjective activity I am sure there will be people who really like your idea. And ofcourse, the whole deathbusiness is surrounded by conservatism and taboos, but maybe people like it that way, because for the living death is complex enough as it is.

With kind regards, Renske (team 5)

Re: Urnbuilding

a double wammy... an interesting combination - and some thoughtful contemplations by Nora on your composition guys... in any case both look intriguing...

Project by Krijn + Renger - the thought is practical, the juxtaposition provocative - although the thoughts that Nora raises could easily be resolved if the urn space with its wall remains a separate domain to the otherside + energetic lifecycle. I also look forward to seeing how this new material that Renger has discovered works.... can't wait to see it built !
By the way how do you see it sprouting axons to connect / inter-act with neighbouring 'neurons' ?

Project by Nora
the rooftop shower is also both practical and provocative - although Nora has ironically clad her shower model in clothes - abit strange ! most people take their clothes off to shower... in any case it will be great to have a rooftop shower - and extra reflection of clouds - wonderful !
Is this an 'axon' to be located somewhere between 'neurons' ???

Re: Urnbuilding

yes the idea is not to wear clothes while showering. It needs some experiments because 4 walls with the spymaterial will have an open effect...
With emergency foil there's more possible if there's less light and almost no lightreflection inside then outside, its totally safe showering on the roof.
